Last weekend, Keegan and I drove to South Dakota with Buddy in tote. We didn’t plan anything major besides seeing his parents and the new kitchen. I’m not exaggerating when I say, it looked like something off of HGTV. As if their house wasn’t awesome enough, the kitchen pulls it all together.

The bathroom in the kitchen was removed, while an additional wing was built from the ground up. As Keegan’s Mom put it, the house finally appears the way it was meant to. The builders matched the new hallway and bathroom perfectly to the original structure. It was very impressive to say the least.

And to top it all off, the appliances are super fancy! The microwave acts as a convection oven, the refrigerator features a grab and go door, and the induction stove top offers the responsiveness of gas with the convenience of electric cooking. Basically, it felt like we were staying in a B&B. We spent the majority of our time in the kitchen, and I wasn’t even mad.

I wish I had a “before picture”, but I really don’t besides this one. If only you could see how different things appear with the hallway addition and removal of the former bathroom.

Keegan’s Dad smoked brisket for 18 hours in the Green Egg, and this was truly the best meat he’s ever prepared for us. Buddy wouldn’t stop begging after we snuck him a piece; he was just as impressed as we were.

Besides spending time with the fam, Keegan and I toured a Rapid City Brewery Festival where his friend Dan performed in a country-indie local band. They sounded great! And with Rapid being such a small town (despite a population of 72,000 people), Keegan encountered several familiar faces.

That evening we met Dan at some dive bar. Keegan’s friend Jerm worked the door, and I’ll be damned if we didn’t run into Matt Edlund! Keegan and Matt grew up together, became roommates in college 4 hours from Rapid, then Keegan moved to Nashville, and I don’t know where Matt went. Maybe North Dakota or Minnesota. So then, Keegan and I moved to Fort Collins and by that point, Matt relocated to Denver. We didn’t know Matt was home the same weekend we were–it made for a very fun and eventful evening.

We also didn’t expect to meet Dan’s new friends, but we did, and they were nice. It went from one of those awkward “I don’t know any of these people” kinda nights to “I’m doing shots with 4 other chicks like we’ve known each other forever”. All in all, it was a great weekend between relaxing at the house and enjoying Rapid’s humble night scene.
