My husband traveled to my hometown, Nashville, earlier this month, and I knew ahead of time to stay busy. The best way to avert homesickness is to stay busy. So rather wonder what he’s up to, I learned to paddle boarding and familiarize myself with Denver. This spontaneous, impromptu trip to Denver relieved my city cravings. It’s been awhile since I’ve toward the city and not the mountains.
Regina and this bartender at Syntax provided an insider’s look at Denver’s hip, swanky bars, but almost every thing they recommended opened at 5:30, and I wanted to take a day trip. So, I did some googling Friday evening and found a pretty cool district to explore.
My journey started at The Ginn Mill on Larimer featuring $2 Sex on the Beaches. When you find a place that plays Snoop Dogg, R.E.M. and whoever sings the Mocarena, you know you’re on the right track. Next, I walked to Biker Jim’s known for a wild-game-take on hotdogs including Alaskan Reindeer, Rattlesnake and Pheasant and Elk Jalapeno, which I tried and tasted delicious. Keegan’s sister Katie met me there; then we headed to Mile High Spirits for mid-day drinks. Their Cocktail Menu is one thing, but the way they display their eclectic selection of vodka ranging from Pickle flavored to Pepperoncini will leave you wondering what the hell they can’t come up with. Mile High Spirits takes liquor to a whole nother level.
Afterwards, I hit the park and chilled for a few. I needed time between the drinks, the hotdog and my ice cream excursion. The first three places on my to-do list shared the same block, but I drove to City Park and High Point creamery for a coveted ice cream flight. I left the park after an hour for my last stop in Denver.
As if the day wasn’t awesome enough, Brittany and Justin met me for drinks and apps at Origins, and we stumbled across the Cherry Festival in Loveland across the street. I felt homesick once over the weekend, but otherwise I did okay. Glad I didn’t stay at home and stew. When in doubt, get out.
